Reanalysis of F-statistic gravitational-wave searches with the higher criticism statistic

We propose a new method of gravitational wave detection using a modified form of higher criticism, a statistical technique introduced by Donoho & Jin (2004). Higher criticism is designed to detect a group of sparse, weak sources, none of which are strong enough to be reliably estimated or detected individually. We apply higher criticism as a second-pass method to synthetic F-statistic and C-sta...

Implementation of an F -statistic all-sky search for continuous gravitational waves in Virgo VSR1 data

We present an implementation of the  -statistic to carry out the first search in data from the Virgo laser interferometric gravitational wave detector for periodic gravitational waves from a priori unknown, isolated rotating neutron stars. We searched a frequency f0 range from 100 Hz to 1 kHz and the frequency dependent spindown f1 range from − × − f 1.6( 100 Hz) 10 0 9 Hz s −1 to zero. A larg...

Accelerated Searches of Gravitational Waves Using Graphics Processing Units

The existence of gravitational waves was predicted by Albert Einstein. Black hole and neutron star binary systems will product strong gravitational waves through their inspiral and eventual merger. The analysis of the gravitational wave data is computationally intensive, requiring matched filtering of terabytes of data with a bank of at least 3000 numerical templates that represent predicted wa...

Parallel Implementation of Particle Swarm Optimization Variants Using Graphics Processing Unit Platform

There are different variants of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm such as Adaptive Particle Swarm Optimization (APSO) and Particle Swarm Optimization with an Aging Leader and Challengers (ALC-PSO). These algorithms improve the performance of PSO in terms of finding the best solution and accelerating the convergence speed. However, these algorithms are computationally intensive. The go...

Graphics processing unit implementation of JPEG2000 for hyperspectral image compression

Hyperspectral image compression has received considerable interest in recent years due to the enormous data volumes collected by imaging spectrometers for Earth Observation. JPEG2000 is an important technique for data compression, which has been successfully used in the context of hyperspectral image compression, either in lossless and lossy fashion. Due to the increasing spatial, spectral, and...
